Extra-Curricular Activities
Alternate Spring BreakDuring Easter vacation every odd calendar year, you can travel to an area (within the US) in desperate need of public attention and manual labor; you can help to rebuild homes or clean up after natural disasters. You volunteer your time and energy for the reward of the great feeling of giving back to the American community! See Miss Cuttitta (C-12) for more information. The next trip is scheduled for spring 2009. Big 9 Math/Science Competition Students in grades 9 through 12 are invited to participate by their math or science teachers. Ms. Stewart, D04, and Mrs. Korhonen, B22, will have more information in February and March. Chess Team and Chess ClubChess Club begins in mid October and will run through February. All students, 9th-12th, are welcome to be a part of the club and to participate with the team on occasion. Organizational meetings will be announced in the student bulletin.Close-up, Washington, D.C.As many as six Powers sophomores and/or juniors are selected to spend a week in Washington, D. C., attending a workshop/seminar experience of government. Half of the cost of this program is paid for by Powers Booster groups and Student Government. (Last year each student paid around $700.) The selection of students will be made in October on the basis of an essay and a speech. Information will be in the daily announcements and on posters in homerooms. Ms. Badour, Math Teacher, is the contact person.DramaMrs. Evans, B-32, is in charge of Powers Drama program.
Students who are interested in working on the technical crew, set construction, or other backstage work for any of these plays, should see Mrs. Evans. En-ActPowers Environmental Activists is a club for students interested in environmental problems and solutions. En-Act will meet all year long. Students should listen to the announcements for a time and place. Mrs. Mary Ann Kost, D-17, is the faculty moderator. En-Act members are responsible for paper recycling at PCHS. The Equestrian Club Show horses at the county fair grounds and against other schools in our area. A typical horse show consisits of English, Western, saddle seat riding and speed classes. If you are interested, you should contact Brent Moore (12) or Carrie Lusty (12). Forensics The Forensics Team participates in speech contests throughout the state in the spring, with students choosing a particular category of speech. Students, 9-12, are eligible and should listen for announcements during September for the first team organizational meetings. Mrs. Minor, D-23, is the faculty moderator.French ClubFrench Club began meeting during the week of September 12. The French Club will organize or promote experiences which expose members to French culture and language. Interested students should listen for announcements. Ms. Kim Droscha, C-11, is the faculty moderator.Future Business Leaders of AmericaThe goal of FBLA is to bring business and education together through conferences, networking opportunities, and business operations. Students interested should see Mr. Ken Andrews A02Interpretation PentathlonIn this forensics activity, students prepare five speeches: prose, poetry, storytelling, dramatic interpretation, and a fifth speech of their choice. The fifth speech can be an original piece of poetry, prose, or fiction, or a humorous piece by another author. The competition will be held in December at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Students do not need to be a forensics team member to participate. Any interested students should contact Mrs. Minor in D-23, early in the semester in order to begin preparation.Intramural BasketballRegistration for intramural basketball is the first week of December. There are four divisions: girls, coed, boys 9/10, and boys 11/12. Games are played before and after school beginning in December. Mr. Robinson, B-25, is the faculty moderator.Law DayLaw Day is a spring activity in which seniors assume the roles of attorneys, witnesses, and participants in a civil or criminal conflict. The students are coached before participating in a mock trial held in a local courtroom. Students may see Mr. Kovel, B24, for more information.Michigan Mathematics Prize Competition (MMPC)Powers students compete for college scholarships with students throughout the state. This challenging exam will be administered here at 8:30 AM on Wednesday, October 10th , and Part II at 8:30 on Wednesday, December 5th. Interested students should speak to their math teacher for further information.Model United NationsModel United Nations of the University of Chicago involves 2,100 students from over 100 high schools, representing 115 different nations. Students represent a given country in simulations of various U. N. committees and related bodies. Topics include current issues and events in the world spotlight. This year’s conference will be held from February 5 to February 8. Look for more information in the student bulletin. Moderated by Mr. Schmit B-31.National Honor Society (NHS)NHS is an organization of juniors and seniors who have demonstrated leadership, scholarship, character, and service, in addition to maintaining a 3.5 cumulative grade point average. Eligible sophomores are contacted in March to invite them to apply. Mr. Pelc, Guidance Office, is the moderator.Optimist Oratorical ContestStudents under 16 on January 1, 2004, will be invited to participate in the Optimist Club oratory contests held in each club in February and March. Announcements will be made in English classes and in the student bulletin as the contest approaches. Mrs. Minor, D-23, is the faculty contact person.Original Interpretation TournamentThis speech and creative writing activity will be held January 12 in Ann Arbor at the University of Michigan. Students in grades 9-12 write their own poetry, prose, or “children’s story for all ages” and perform it. Registration for this activity must be submitted to the Michigan Interscholastic Forensics Association in early October. Students who are interested should contact Mrs. Minor in D-23.Powderpuff FootballJunior and Senior girls organize into teams, practice, and compete against one another on the Wednesday night of Homecoming Week, Sptember 24. Organizational information will be announced early in September.Quiz Bowl TeamThe Powers Quiz Bowl Team competes in the WFUM High School Challenge program, the Big 9 Academic League, and the Genesee Academic League, as well as other invitational tournaments. There are both varsity and junior varsity levels of competition. All students are welcome. Interested students should see Ms. Schuler, C03.Robotics TeamThe Robotics Team recruits new members from September through December. They are looking for students with interest and expertise in mathematics, science, engineering, and computers. The team meets throughout the year to fundraise and, beginning in December, to design and build a robot according to the competition specifications. The team will enter several nationwide competitions.Spanish ClubSpanish Club is a group on campus of students who enjoy learning about Hispanic cultures and celebrating the differences in traditions. Meetings are generally in the morning and always announced. Past activities have included: taco parties, volleyball, kick ball, and a trip to Chicago to eat in an authentic restaurant (with the French club). See Ms. VanCamp (C-13) or Senorita Cuttitta (C-12) for more information.Spirit ClubSpirit Club is an organization of students whose purpose is to raise school spirit by attending sporting events together and promoting good sportsmanship. The group meets occasionally to discuss new ideas. Meetings will be announced in the Student Bulletin. All students are welcome.
Student CongressIn this forensics activity students participate in a three day simulated government experience at the state capitol building in Lansing in September. Students qualify for roles as senators, representatives, lobbyists, etc, by participating successfully in a spring discussion festival. The program will be advertised in the student bulletin in May. The moderator for this activity is Mrs. Minor, D-23. Student GovernmentStudent Government plans, implements, and funds a majority of student activities in the school. Elections for sophomore, junior, and senior student government members are held in May. Elections for five freshman student government members are held in September. Petitions with 50 student and 2 faculty signatures must be turned in prior to the elections. Candidates are asked to make a brief, two minute speech, at a class meeting just prior to elections. Mr. Beiser, C-10, is Student Government moderator. Student MinistersDuring September, Father Steve Anderson will make an announcement asking for students, 9-12, to sign up to be Student Ministers. Students who are interested in reading at Mass, serving communion, or accepting roles as ushers, greeters or altar servers should see Father Steve at that time. There may be several training sessions before students begin their roles as student ministers.Student TrainersThe Athletic Department is looking for students who would like to learn how to assist the trainer with organizing first aid equipment, pre-game taping, and first aid measures. Students who are interested should give their names to Mrs. Adams or Mr. Hearns in the Main Office. Mr. Rigiel, the trainer, will give instruction to student trainers in the Training Room after school.Students Against Driving Drunk or Destructive Decisions (SADD) This group plans activities to inform their peers about the dangers of destructive decisions, including drinking and driving. All students are welcome to attend meetings and participate. Meetings will usually be held the second Wednesday of each month. Talent ShowThe Powers Talent Show is a Student Government sponsored activity, which is planned as a fund raiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. This year’s show is scheduled for April 25. Information on entering the Talent Show will be published in the student bulletin in March.UM-Flint Math Field DayThis math competition is held in February. A team of five students will be chosen by the Math Department to compete. Students may obtain further information from their math teachers.Voice of Democracy Speech ContestPowers students, grades 9-12, are invited to participate in the VFW speech contest in October. Last year the first place winner at Powers received a $200 bond and trophy, the second place winner received a $150 bond, and the third place winner received a $100 bond. The first place winner of Powers contest will have a professional recording made of his or her speech. That recording will be sent on to regional, state, and national competition where there are further prizes. Students will receive further information on this competition in their English classes.Yellow Ribbon ProjectThe Yellow Ribbon group on campus is part of a national non-profit organization that helps with the recognition and prevention of suicide. Yellow Ribbon members are trained peer listeners to help those students most in need of a caring and dependable confidant. Yellow Ribbon is active in raising Suicide Awareness and promoting healthy decision making. Yellow Ribbon sponsors such activities as: Winter Candy Cane Sale, Rose Sale during Prom Week and Sadies, etc.Outside OpportunitiesMany leadership programs and other opportunities sponsored by outside groups will be advertised in the Guidance Bulletin which is sent to homerooms on Monday or in the daily student bulletin which is read in homeroom.
