DUAL ENROLLMENT EDUCATIONAL PARTNERSHIP

DEEP

Picture
Picture

DEEP (Dual Enrollment Educational Partnership) provides junior and senior high students the opportunity to earn up to 30 college credits from Kettering University and the University of Michigan-Flint without leaving the Powers Catholic campus.

What is Dual Enrollment?
- Opportunity for high school students to take college classes and count credit from these classes for both high school and college credit.

Why Would A Student Dually Enroll?
- Save Money
- Save Time
- Try A Career Path

How Much Does is Cost?
• The State of Michigan is currently paying a college or university $600 per student per class.
• The $600 per student per class is based on the state average per pupil allotment of $7209 and may be subject to change in the
future.
• The State of Michigan will reimburse for up to 30 credits (approximately 10 college classes depending on the number of
credits per college class).

Different Colleges Have Different Costs
UM Flint typically costs $359 a credit hour but reduces rate for dual enrolled students to $273 per credit hour.
-There is a $107 student activity fee, but that includes use of facilities
-A three credit class would cost $926, minus the $600 allotment from the State. Total cost $326
per class
• Kettering University is normally $1132 per credit. Which equates to $4528 per class for a four credit class.
• Kettering will offer a class (regardless of credits) to Powers students for $1200 which equals a $600 out of pocket expense.
• Mott Community College tuition per 3 credit class is $351.69 + $137. 39 in fees equals a total of $489.08
• The difference between $600 allotment and the $489.08 ($110.92) can be used for books

Financial Information
• Parents are responsible for all overage costs including books, fees and transportation
• Students MUST repay any failures SO STUDENTS MUST BE READY TO BEGIN THEIR COLLEGE TRANSCRIPT
• FERPA rules apply- There is no parent communication with instructor

How Does A Student Qualify?
• Requirements
–
Letter from principal or principal’s representative to college or university
– Socially Mature (Attendance, Attitude, Behavior)
– College Ready - College Transcript Begins!
– Obtains Qualifying Scores
– Grades 11-12 (and 10th on a limited basis)

GPA and Other Criteria
• Seniors- 3.3 GPA
• Juniors- 3.4 GPA
• Sophomores- 3.5 GPA

A Student must have a positive endorsement from a minimum of five teachers

Classes That Are Acceptable
• Non-Essential Electives (Foreign Language (including ASL), Advanced Placement, and Career Track Classes)
• No hobby, craft, Theology, or PE classes allowed

Types of Dual Enrollment
• Embedded- Offered on Powers Campus during the school day
• Must sign up during registration for the following year
• Courses offered based on number of participants
• Students must be able to meet program requirements
• Kettering and UM Flint have both shown interest
• If a student drops a dually enrolled class - credit recovery may be necessary

• Classes taken on own time

– Cannot interfere with the school day

– Must be H.S. approved at least 6 weeks prior to start of college class
    – Must have own transportation
    – Must meet college admission criteria
    – If a student fails or drops a class, credit recovery may be necessary
    – Class placement at Powers is subject to availability
    – Summer Classes will NOT qualify for $600 state allotment
    – A student cannot take more than six classes in a calendar year

Effect on Class Rank and GPA
• Only embedded classes held on the Powers site will qualify for honor points unless a student has exhausted the depth of the honors course offerings (Calculus II). A college class that counts as credit will equal 1 credit at Powers Catholic.
• Campus based classes will not be configured into GPA but will count for credit.
• A student must be in attendance for a full day for all eight semesters of high school to receive a Powers diploma.
