Christian Service

Christian Service Requirements

Students are required to complete 50 hours of Christian Service to be eligible for graduation. The first 30 hours of service must be completed by the end of their junior year. The last 20 hours will be completed in their senior year within the Capstone Project that is part of the 12th grade Theology class and a graduation requirement.

Any questions please contact the service coordinator---Ms. Bridget Rabine ([email protected])

There are three areas of service that the students can complete:
Type of Service
Description
Total Number of Hours
Service at Powers Catholic
Service hours may be earned by volunteering at school-sponsored events that are not fundraisers. Examples include the Open House, Community Night at athletic events, Camp of Champions, art shows, and theater productions.
In addition, students may receive service hours for working the concession stand at athletic events, provided the activity is not part of a class requirement, the student is not paid, and the proceeds directly benefit the school community (e.g., supporting school teams or programs).
These activities qualify for service hours only if they occur outside of regular school hours and are not for personal or group profit.
Up to 10 of total hours for graduation requirement
Service at your Parish or Church
Volunteer work done for a church community (preferably your own) that is not a fundraiser. Examples of this would be Vacation Bible School, altar serving, teaching catechism, singing in the choir, campus cleanups, youth group leadership, and at the parish school.
Up to 10 total hours for graduation requirement
Service in the Community
Volunteer work done for a non-profit organization listed on our website. If a student wants to use another organization, it must be cleared by the service coordinator before volunteering.

Christian Service Hour Guidelines
1. Service Year Definition
The service year begins the day after the last day of final exams and ends on the last day of final exams the following spring.
All summer service counts toward the upcoming school year.

2. Recording Service Hours
  • Service hours must be recorded within the same semester they are completed using the MobileServe App.
  • Entries submitted after the semester will not be accepted, except for limited grace given to hours completed at the very end of a semester.
  • The actual date of service must be entered into MobileServe. If a student serves on three different days, each day must be entered as a separate submission.
3. Nature of Service
  • All service hours must be human-focused. While organizations like the Humane Society are valuable, they fall outside the scope of the Christian Service requirements.
  • Hours must involve direct community engagement. Activities such as donating items brought to school without participating in distribution or outreach do not count.
  • All service must take place outside of regular school hours.
4. Approved Organizations
  • Service hours are limited to a list of pre-approved organizations.
  • If a student wishes to volunteer with an organization not on the list, they must seek pre-approval from the Service Coordinator before beginning the service.
5. Charger Outreach Days
Charger Outreach Days organized by Powers Catholic are part of the Capstone Project Service Learning Initiative and do not count toward Christian service hours.

6. Verification of Hours
  • Hours must be verified by the adult supervisor who was present during the service.
  • Students must enter the supervisor’s professional email address for verification.
  • Students may not serve as their own supervisor. Parents may only serve as supervisors if they are the official point of contact for all students at the event and use an organizational email.
7. Fundraising Activities
  • Activities involving fundraising for a school club or team—such as working a concession stand or participating in a bake sale--may count as service only if they directly benefit the school community, are not part of a class requirement, and the student is not compensated in any way.
8. Dual Credit Restriction
Service hours cannot be double-counted for both the graduation requirement and other organizations such as NHS, Scouting, or Rotary.

9. Hour Limits by Category
  • Hours completed beyond the allowed limit in certain categories may still count for House Points, but will not apply toward the Christian Service graduation requirement.
10. Hour Recommendations and Requirements
  • It is recommended that students complete 5 hours per semester through the end of junior year, for a total of 30 hours.
  • Seniors will complete an additional 20-hour Capstone Project.
  • Transfer students begin accumulating hours in their second semester of enrollment and are not responsible for hours prior to attending Powers Catholic.

Grand Blanc) offers free food on the third Saturday of the month from May through October to those in need.  In order to do this, we need approximately 40 volunteers to help with the distribution each month.  We ask volunteers to come at 8:00am and park at the Sikh Temple parking lot directly south of the church.  The distribution begins at 9:00am and goes until the food runs out (usually around 11:00am with a lunch for volunteers following).  Volunteers do not have to stay for the entire distribution, and will be instructed about what to do when they arrive.  If you have any questions, please contact the church office at 810-424-6707 or [email protected].

Big Brother Big Sisters -  has an urgent need for volunteers.  Currently, they have almost 250 waiting Littles, mostly young boys, who are waiting for someone to ignite their potential. Mentors in our program have the opportunity to connect and advocate for youth in our community. When youth develop healthy relationships with caring and supportive adults, they are positioned to do well in school and in life, realizing their full potential. Please join us in our mission to create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.   For more information, on our program, you can visit our website at https://www.bbbsflint.org/be/
