Summer Reading Info for Summer 2024 The following is a list of the summer reading assignments. Please scroll down to your 2024-2025 class and read what your assigned summer reading assignment is. If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Reynolds at sreynolds@powerscatholic.org.
Freshman English
ALL 9th grade English classes: Do NOT choose a novel that has been turned into a film/TV show.
English 9 I: Read The Hunger Games. You will just READ it (no annotating). Do not just watch the movie. Be ready to complete an in-class writing assignment when you return to school.
English 9: You will choose a book that you have NEVER read before. It must be at least 100 pages in length. You will just READ it (no annotating). Be ready to complete an in-class writing assignment when you return to school.
English 9 Advanced: You will choose a book that you have NEVER read before. It must be at least 150 pages in length. You will just READ it (no annotating). Be ready to complete an in-class writing assignment when you return to school.
Pre-AP 9: You will choose a book off the AP Reading List. You cannot choose books that have been crossed off the list. No plays! You will just READ it (no annotating). Be ready to complete an in-class writing assignment when you return to school.
Sophomore English
English 10 I: Read The Hunger Games. You will just READ it (no annotating). Do not just watch the movie. Be ready to complete an in-class writing assignment when you return to school.
English 10 (American Literature): Choose one of the following titles:
- Hunting Teddy Roosevelt by James A. Ross
- Unbroken (The Young Adult Adaptation) by Lauren Hillenbrand - NOT THE MOVIE
- Life in Motion: An Unlikely Ballerina by Misty Copeland
English 10 Advanced (American Literature): You will read The Witch of Blackbird Pond (by Elizabeth George Speare). You will just READ it (however, you are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to annotate). Be ready to complete a project and writing assignment when you return to school. Students MUST have a physical copy of the text upon returning to school in August.
Pre-AP 10: You will sign up (using the link below) to read a book off the AP Reading List which you’ve not read before. You are required to just read it (however, you are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to ALWAYS annotate). Be ready to complete in-class writing assignments/project related to your selection when you return to school. Students MUST have a physical copy of the text upon returning to school in August. Do NOT read: Of Mice and Men, or Black Boy (or anything else that has been crossed off the list). Link to Sign Up Sheet
Junior English
English 11 I: You will choose a book that you have NEVER read before. It must be at least 100 pages in length. You will just READ it (no annotating). Be ready to complete a project when you return to school. Do NOT read: Tuesdays with Morrie, The Great Gatsby
English 11 (Comp & Lit): You will read Finding Chika: A Little Girl, an Earthquake, and the Making of a Family (by Mitch Albom). You will just READ it (however, you are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to annotate). Be ready to complete a project when you return to school. Students MUST have a physical copy of the text upon returning to school in August.

Senior English

English 12: Read Maus 1 by Art Spiegelman. This is a graphic memoir about the Holocaust. You will just READ it (no annotating). Be ready to complete an in-class writing assignment/project when you return to school.

There are no Summer math assignments for the 2024-25 school year.

Summer Science Assignments
All students enrolled in a grade 9 science class or an AP science class for the coming school year are required to complete a Science Summer Assignment. All freshmen students will have the same summer assignment, regardless of which 9th grade class they are in first semester. AP Science Summer Assignments are specific to the AP course in which the student is enrolled.

The assignment MUST be completed before the first day of school. The summer assignment was designed to help you prepare for your science class. Completion of the Science Summer Assignment will help to ensure that you are ready for the course. If you are unsure how to proceed on the assignment, feel free to ask a sibling or parent for guidance, or seek help from a friend who is confident. This assignment will be counted as part of your first marking period grade.
